Iniative

Having iniative leads people to seek out more challenging work, save money for long term goals, get involved in activities that interest them or help others, do a little extra at work (leading to a promotion and raise, maybe!) and in general helps in many areas of life. However, even the most internally motivated people with a high level of iniative can have it trained out of them if they spend too many hours in scheduled activities and don't have enough free time left for iniating their own projects. Another way parents accidentally deprive children of the joys of needing iniative is by purchasing everything for them or giving them too much money, too often, or too consistently. This eliminates the need to develop the iniative to work for what they want or need. It might be called "lazy" but it's hardly fair to expect anyone to want to work, if they don't need to!
