Money and
Financial Management

Money Management is one of the most important lifelong skills to help your child learn from a very young age. The basic concept of trading something you value (money) for something else (soda, candy, toys, etc) is at the foundation of understanding money and how it works, so collections such as trading cards or little cars or anything else all help develop this understanding as your child makes trades with friends. Card games, dominoes and board games use pretend money or chips to practice counting money and using it in a controlled environment where it is safe to make mistakes with your money without risk to your real life. Stickers are handy for learning names of numerals and also for using price stickers at garage sales, another great activity to help your child learn about money in a very direct way. Even the youngest children can earn their own spending money. The younger they spend every cent on junk and realize that money can, indeed, run out, the better of both they and your wallet will be! Think of lessons about money like vaccinations - it hurts just a bit right now, of course, to see your young child feel sad, disappointed or angry about having no money, but helping children get used to the idea of needing to earn their own money now will have long term benefits for both of you.
