Patience & Waiting
(delayed gratification)

Waiting can seem hard for anyone, but often seems especially difficult for young children. When you add ADD or ADHD to the mix, which are both common now, you might despair of your child or student ever learning to wait. It must be learned, however! Understanding that you often must wait for what you want is a cornerstone of success in all areas, whether it be waiting for a cake to bake, waiting for your plants to grow, waiting for high school or college graduation, waiting for your investments to increase, waiting for the driver in front of you to turn when you wish they would hurry - in all areas of life, delaying our own personal gratification is an important skill to develop.

Help your children learn coping and waiting skills, such as reading a book, singing little songs, drawing on a sketch pad, chatting nicely with other people in line, making up games to pass the time, or any other skills that you have found helpful. There are many ways to wait, so help your children learn several techniques they will be able to use independently later.
